Letter from Superintendent |
Dear DBSD Students, staff and public,
On Friday the 13th, (love the date), at 3:30 PM in the Healy Community Library, Senator Thomas and Representative Guttenberg will meet with the School Board to discuss various issues regarding our schools and needs of our students. We have three sources of revenue, the federal government, the state and the Borough. The federal government accounts for 7% of school budgets nationally, and impacts 85% of programs. A little bit of money for a lot of regulation. Our borough currently supports the maximum they are allowed by state law. That is appreciated!! Most of our funding comes from the state, and it has not kept up with inflation for years, and that is showing. Our legislators are strong supporters of education, and need to know our educational situation, as their constituents.
This meeting will precede a regular constituent meeting at 5:30. PLEASE attend both meetings to show support for your children and our school system, as well as all the issues pertinent to residents of Denali Borough.
We will share with you more news as this meeting approaches.
Kim Langton

Health Tips Offered by the Center for Disease Control |
Here on some health tips offered by the Center for Disease Control on staying healthy and protecting yourself from the flu. (Seasonal or Swine). As of today, there has not been a reported case of Swine Flu in Alaska. However, it is only a matter of time until it does reach our state. In the meantime, we can do a few things to remain healthy and be prepare our homes and families in case the illness does reach our doorstep
Avoid close contact with ill persons, or large crowds.
Stay at home when you are sick
Cover your cough and nose
Wash your hands often, use a hand sanitizer
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
Practice other good health habits such as get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious foods.
Parents and families need to develop their own personal preparedness plan to be able to respond to possible school or daycare closings and the need to provide care for an ill family member.
Symptoms to look for are fever with upper respiratory illness. If you or a family member become ill, please see a health care provider. If someone does develop the illness Isolation is required.
• Isolate self at home
• Wearing a mask may help reduce spread of disease (if ill)
• Isolate for 7 days, or 1 day after the symptoms go away
Quarantine is an option if exposed to disease
• This means to stay away from others, even though you do not have diseases
• The incubation period (the time of being exposed to the virus and when the disease emerges) is 2-7 days
• For example, if afraid of coming down with the flu after a possible exposure to the virus, if no signs and symptoms appear after 1 week you are probably OK
H1N1 is not a food borne disease – you cannot contract this disease by eating pork or other foods
The state of Alaska has a very good website which the keep updated.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact me.
Thank you.

A Special Trick-or-Treat At Clear Air Force Base |
|
Middle School basketball players from Anderson School, Tri-Valley School, Tok, Nenana and Northway enjoyed a special trick-or-treat at Clear Air Force Base on Halloween weekend. Those players were some of the nine teams who participated in the Annual Sportsmanship Tournament in Anderson. Late in the afternoon, on Oct. 31, Clear AFB invited students for an hour of free bowling, free snacks, a stroll down a spooky hallway and trick-or-treating through the dorms. A special military bus provided transportation.
It was a great addition to the weekend. Thanks to our community partner Clear Air Force Base for the invitation and the big Halloween scares! Sponsored by Clear Services, the Clear Family Readiness Group and many spooky volunteers.
Here some Tri-Valley School students prepare to enter the spooky hallway.

Donations From the Salmon Bake to the Denali Arts & Humanities Alliance |
|
DBSD students Marin, Liz and Shelby collect donations at the door of the Denali Salmon Bake early Saturday night. The Bake generously donated all proceeds from the door, giving the new Denali Arts & Humanities Alliance a grand total of about $1,000.
Entertainment for the evening included a fabulous performance by Denali's musical dynamo Candace Mudge on vibes, Darren Mudge on guitar and Allan Mortenson of Nenana on drums. Salty Gravy, a favorite local bluegrass band, kept things hopping during the late shift.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this a success. Lots of local residents came for dinner and music.
A special thanks to Denali Salmon Bake, whose owners strongly support the arts and humanities in the Denali Borough.
The new Denali Arts & Humanities Alliance is a community group, whose mission is to keep arts and humanities thriving in the Denali Borough School District. The Alliance, which grew out of the school district strategic planning, includes Denali Borough School District, Kids In Motion, Alaska Geographic, Denali Education Center and Denali National Park. |

DBSD teachers Tricia Turley of Anderson and Mark Martin (right) of Tri-Valley look over photos of the Nenana River, as National Science Foundation researcher Martin Jeffries looks on. The teachers participated in a two-day workshop over the weekend, as they continue helping students participate in this International Polar Year project. They are studying freezing and thawing of the Nenana River. In the spring and fall, students visit the river every day and record observations. Jeffries and fellow scientist Kim Morris traveled here from Washington DC for the workshop, which took place at the Murie Science and Learning Center. |

Anderson School Glass Mosaic |
|
Glass Mosaic Nears Completion
The first part of the Glass Mosaic Project, at Anderson School, is almost complete. After months of careful work, a dedicated group of artists spread grout this week over the replica of the Alaska quarter. The second half of the project, a scene of Mount McKinley and the Alaska Range, will be grouted next.
Anderson students Sammy and Cody were a huge help Wednesday night, helping with the finishing touche, along with dedicated volunteers Brad and Sage Fabrizio and Michelle Turk and project supervisor Sandra Trumbower.
Here is a glimpse of a detail of the mosaic - the fused glass salmon was created by professional stained glass artist Michelle Turk of Denali Glass Studio.
Soon, this masterpiece will hang in the foyer of Anderson School. Watch for notices to celebrate this amazing project. This project funded by an Alaska Association of School Boards Community Engagement Grant. |

Jazz Trio Performs in Healy |
Denali Borough School District's own music teacher Candace Mainiero performed March 29 with the Barney McClure Jazz Trio, at Tri-Valley School. The two-hour performance included Candace on vibes, holding her own with a nationally-known musician.
The last time Barney McClure visited was last Fall, when his company, Barney McClure Productions, brought the musical "A Year With Frog -N- Toad." That family show sold out! He hinted that he is working on another musical for early 2009, which we hope to bring to Healy.
McClure is a nationally-known jazz musician, whose work has been featured in the films, "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Mr. Holland's Opus." He has played with many jazz "greats" over the years, and now lives in Fairbanks.
His passion for music and the energy of his fellow musicians was unmistakable at the Healy performance. Candace fit right in. It was a real treat for the audience and a reminder of how talented she is - like so many of our district staff.
This performance was sponsored by the Denali Borough School District Arts and Music Departments and Kids In Motion. |
