The Denali Borough School District, located in Interior Alaska, includes three schools along an 80-mile stretch of the George Parks Highway, as well as a state-wide correspondence school. The School District administrative office is located in Healy, in the center of the district.

Fairbanks, the nearest metropolitan area, is located 110 miles north of Healy, and Anchorage is 250 miles to the south. The district has approximately 2,100 residents. During the summer months there is a sizeable itinerant work force in the area because of the large number of visitors to Denali National Park, and the population increases significantly.

Healy is located 12 miles from the entrance to Denali National Park. Facilities available in Healy includes several combinations of gas station, package liquor, grocery, restaurant/café, video rental, and automotive towing/repair. In addition to the post office, there is an itinerant magistrate and a medical clinic staffed by a physician’s assistant. The office of the Borough Mayor and Clerk is located in Healy. Hotel accommodations are available throughout the year. The year-around population of Healy and the outlying areas is approximately 900. Residents are employed by the Usibelli Coal Mine, Golden Valley Electric Association, Denali National Park, and various small businesses that primarily serve the tourist trade.

Winter weather in the district can be severe. Many areas experience severe winds. Temperatures range from –60º F in the winter to +90º F in the summer. Daylight ranges from almost continuous in the summer to minimal in the winter.

The location of Mt. McKinley in the area, together with the scenic beauty, encourages much tourism during the summer months. Wildlife, including moose, bear, Dall sheep, caribou, wolves, fox, and other small animals, are present in the area, particularly in Denali National Park. Opportunities for wildlife photography, hiking, and camping are abundant in the summer season. Cross-country skiing, dog mushing, and snowmobiling are common wintertime activities.
